Here's a basic introduction and tutorial to the Simple Flash Comic Engine
:thumb196748487:

AS2 and AS3 files for Flash version MX and newer are located here.

For a better tutorial that goes more into detail on the advantages of using Flash for comics, *Balak01 has a couple Flash comics on the subject located here and here. I'd recommend checking them out! (just a warning: there is some foul language used in these)

I started this a few weeks ago when I released the engine itself, but school's been getting in the way. I decided to cut a bit of fanciness in favor of actually getting it done soon, so it still looks a bit rough at parts.

Hi, is it possible to put text which will change in every page in the middle of navigation bar? If it is, could you please tell me how?

How do connect frames together? Like when you click a button and you go to the next frame or page in this case.

Is there a way to remove the black bar on the bottom?

My last reply was incorrect. The easiest way to remove the black bar would be to take all the black parts in the "GUI Parts" symbol and set them to a color with an alpha transparency of 0, not to delete them. Full details are listed in the thread of my last reply.

In the Library panel, open the Comic System Folder and edit the "GUI Parts" symbol. Unlock the "Default" layer and then delete the black parts on all the frames.

I've tried that, and when I got to test the comic, the buttons aren't anywhere to be found.

I see. That's something I didn't completely account for. There needs to be any form of shape in frame 9, the one labeled "Navigation Button Tray." It's width won't matter; at the very least, it just needs to have a height of your intended button shapes. If it's not tall enough, the buttons will end up placed beyond the bottom of the screen.

The button shapes also need to be aligned so that the most upper-left point is at the origin point (the +) on the stage. If they're spaced away from it (like if you removed the black section of the default set), they won't align properly since Flash only calculates width and height based on just the shape area of the object, and not based on the shape and origin point combined.

So the easiest way to remove the black bar would be to take all the black parts in the "GUI Parts" symbol and set them to a color with an alpha transparency of 0, not to delete them.

Hey. It's not too hard. At first I had a few missteps, but just play around with it. If you have photoshop files make sure to save them as jpegs. I put them on my desktop. Then with flash I just import the jpeg directly to the stage or you can import them to the library to use when you need them. Then when I need a new frame I go to the menu bar --INSERT---TIMELINE---BLANK KEYFRAME ----then you have a blank frame then, import your next jpeg to stage, etc. etc.

I'm not sure if i'm explaining it clearly, but hopefully you get the gist. Honestly just play around with it. That's how doing it. I've just started out as well and already I'm getting a feel for it. I know I've got a lot to learn but it's getting easier and actually pretty fun.

If you have any more questions, I'll try my best to help you out. It's still pretty fresh in my mind so maybe I can help you. You can reach me on my deviantpage. I check in when I can.

THis is so freakin cool. Though... I'm still not sure how to use it ^^; It seems geared towards people who already know some flash. I was hoping the tutorial would give a step by step guide on how to drop the panels/scenes into play, exporting it, etc. I'm a strictly comics person, so I have 0 experience with flash... Is there any sort of instructions or other tutorial? This is great; it shows you the advantages of using it, and what this can do.... but not -how- to do it XDDD Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, I guess it isn't totally geared towards people with absolutely no previous experience with Flash. I can point out some tutorials I know about that are good for that, though.

A friend of mine has a series of Vimeo tutorials on using Flash for animation: [link]
Adam Phillips also has a few tutorials on using Flash: [link]

I was first totally inspired by Balak to do one of these digital comics. Then I realized I would have to learn flash/code and got totally demoralized (i suck at learning computer stuff. It takes me a very long time to figure things out).

Thank you so much for doing this. You re-inspired me when I needed it most!
You are awesome!

Spiffy! I had wanted to try my hand at a Flash comic since seeing one a couple years ago, but had never been able to do it (I think I had a radically different version of Flash than the one used in the tutorial I had been using)

I'll have to give this a try now.
